Caring for a pet is full of challenges. Pet owners are faced with a sea of information, and sales campaigns all claim to have the best products and services on the market.

Even after you've made your decisions about who to trust and where to go, you then need to make the care experience positive for your pet.

In this month's FOCUS Group, we will address the confusion and concern that coincide with all aspects of your pet's care - from low stress vet visits to nail trims to muzzle training, we will leave no husbandry topic untouched!

Managing a Multi-Member Household

Raising a dog successfully heavily depends on consistency. However, when the household also includes other adults, kids, and/or multiple pets, it seems like consistency flies out the window.

It's important to not only build your relationship with your canine companion, but also to support the relationship your dog has with everyone else in the home.

In this month's FOCUS Group, we will discuss what it's like to manage the dog-dog dynamics, dog-kid dynamics, and dog-adult dynamics of a multi-member household.

Keep It Simple & Silly!

Building Bonds Through Appropriate Play

Do you know how to play with your dog? Do you know what good play looks like? Do you know how to help your dog learn ideal play skills?

It's okay to answer "no" to these questions! Most pet professionals struggle with recognizing and teaching pups how to play appropriately and many researchers can't even agree on the definition or purpose of play behavior.

In this month's FOCUS Group, we will discuss a few frameworks to help guide you and your dog towards lovely, cooperative play sessions, both with each other and with other playmates.

Safe & Successful Leash Walks

Achieving the loose leash walk can feel a bit like chasing a unicorn. It's common for dogs to pull, stop, lunge, bark, sniff, and run while out and about - so how do you get them to maintain a slack leash and focus on the handler?

In this month's FOCUS Group, we will debunk myths about leash walking, discuss tips for a connected walking experience, and even play a few of my favorite (updated!) leash games. Leash walks should be enjoyable for both the human and dog ends of the leash!

Preventing the Anxiety During Separation

Teaching dogs how to be okay by themselves is one of my main focuses in a training program. It's hugely beneficial for dogs to have a space designated for relaxation, where they can sleep, recharge, take a break, and feel secure.

Often, however, dogs develop problematic behaviors when left alone or separated from their people.

In this month's FOCUS Group, we will explore why our dogs struggle with solo time and how to teach them that independence is actually a good thing!

(Plus, I bet you also need occasional breaks from your pestering pup.)

About our Guest

Cori started her training career working with marine animals using positive reinforcement techniques. When she transitioned her focus to training dogs through her business, P.A.L.S. Unlimited Dog Training, she quickly found that the pups suffering from separation anxiety were the ones who were not only the most misunderstood but also the ones who most benefitted from her unique skillset. Cori's background in psychology and her attention to detail have helped her develop separation anxiety programs that have completely changed the lives of her clients and their dogs - for the better!

Working in Public:

Teaching your Working or family dog to navigate the world

You may have noticed that your dog behaves quite differently when they arrive in a new place. Some dogs are a bit worried in an unfamiliar environment, some are excessively distracted, some are overly excited, and many can be quite difficult to handle.

In this month's FOCUS Group, we will cover strategies to teach you and your dog how to navigate a new space with confidence, focus, and connection. These skills are critical for working dogs to successfully perform their job, but the family dog will also benefit from pleasant outings around town.

About our Guest

Catherine has diverse experience in training dogs for public access: from raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind to teaching psychiatric patients to train service dogs to leading "Out & About" style classes for private training classes. She has used techniques like "puppy parkour" and recall games for confidence building, and she's helped shelter dogs rise to their full potential through behavior modification and playgroups. Her passion is the special bond between a person and their working dog, no matter what the job.
